The Allan Handelman Show
For January 19, 2003
|
| This week on The Allan Handelman Show we dig out the airchecks
to hear some of the greatest disc jockeys of all time. Polled
in 1966 about the greatest influences on their lives, teenagers
named their top three, in this order: God, disc jockeys, and
parents. |

Also this week, one of Allan's guests is legendary author
and journalist Ben Fong-Torres, former editor and award-winning
reporter for Rolling Stone. Ben's latest book is called, The
Hits Just Keep on Coming: The History of Top 40 Rock Radio.
The book comes with a CD packed with airchecks, and shows
how the Top 40 Rock format became the on-air birthplace of
Rock and Roll, the mouthpiece of the baby boomers, and even
the savior of radio itself. We'll also relate the tragic early
demise of many Top 40 personalities and show how the format
survived and evolved to what we have today. Ben was a DJ on
the acclaimed rock station KSAN for nine years, and former
managing editor of Gavin, a leading publication for radio
professionals. His other books include Not Fade Away, Hickory
Wind, and his best-selling memoirs, The Rice Room: Growing
Up Chinese-American-From Number Two Son to Rock'N'Roll.

Plus this week, Kayla "The Naked Tiger Girl"
from PETA will be naked in a cage and you can watch it live
from our studio view cam. She's on a mission to disrupt a
circus in Charlotte on Monday. See her Sunday night, and then
watch her on the news Monday, as she gets arrested for pulling
this off. Joining her is Rav Chand, PETA's coordinator, marathon
runner and a US Marine who is going off to war after the show.
